When upgrading from SOAPware V5 to SOAPware 2008, we first need to know whether you are using MySQL or PostgreSQL databases. You can find out by going to Start, Programs, SOAPware 5, SOAPware 5. In the Login screen, click the Options button. Beside Server Type, it will list what type of database you have, either MySQL or PostgreSQL.

If you have MYSQL, then you will need to contact SOAPware Support to schedule a MySQL to PostgreSQL migration first. Because SOAPware 2008 runs only on PostgreSQL, this migration has to be done before you can test or upgrade to SOAPware 2008. There is no charge for this and SOAPware Support will perform it for you by streaming into your server. Once this migration has been done, you can proceed to Upgrading SOAPware 2008.

If you have PostgreSQL, then you do not need to do a migration and can choose between the two options below to get SOAPware 2008.

Upgrading to SOAPware 2008

There are two options if you have V5 and want to go to SOAPware 2008. You may practice with and test SOAPware 2008 before implementing it in your office. You also may upgrade directly to it without trying it out.

Try SOAPware 2008 before Upgrade

If you would like to try it out before actually upgrading to it, you will need to use one of your computers in your office to install SOAPware 2008 on. This computer CANNOT be your server. Also, SOAPware V5 will NOT be able to run on the same computer that you are installing SOAPware 2008 to. For this reason, you should install it to a computer that you least use SOAPware V5 on. This computer will be a training/testing computer for SOAPware 2008. Once you have selected a machine, perform the following steps:

1.       Install the SOAPware PostgreSQL Data Server, Data Manager and SOAPware 2008 on this computer.

2.       Make a backup of your current databases on your server.

Backup Instructions - Look under Backup. Use the Backup Now button.

3.       On your SOAPware 2008 testing machine, restore your backup you made on the current server.

Restore Instructions – Look under Restore.

4.       Open SOAPware 2008. Use localhost for the server to make sure SOAPware 2008 is pointed to your test databases and not your actual, live databases .

Use your normal login IDs and passwords. Remember, the Built-In Administrator login will only have access to Security.

When you are ready to move to SOAPware 2008, follow the instructions below.

Upgrade directly to SOAPware 2008

If you want to upgrade to SOAPware 2008 without trying it first, then these are the steps to do that.

1.       Backup your current SOAPware databases. The process of going from V5 to SOAPware 2008 is a one way process. A backup before the update is essential.

2.       Install SOAPware 2008 on one computer.

3.       When SOAPware 2008 is installed, go to Start, Programs, SOAPware, SOAPware to login. It will apply database updates. After this is finished, proceed to step 4.

4.       Install SOAPware 2008 on all your machines. Use the same install guide from Step 2 if you need to.

5.       Update SOAPwareXChange and/or SOAPwareXChangeHL7 if you are using these modules. If you do not use these modules, disregard this step.

This completes the setup of SOAPware 2008. The next few steps are not required, but are recommended to take advantage of SOAPware 2008's capabilities.

6.       Log in to SOAPware 2008 on one of your machines.

7.       Go to Docutainers, Smartext Items.

8.       Press the Update Local Smartext Items on the right side of the window. This will update smartext items that you’ve already downloaded to their latest version.

NOTE: You may need to resize the Smartext Items window to see all the buttons. Move your cursor over the right edge of the window and click and drag to the right.
