Documentation provided by Applicant that covers the patch (hot-fix) handling process for EMR:
Prior to Patching:
Patches should only be preformed by qualified personnel and not arbitrarily when someone feels like it. Someone in the office should be designated as the Patch Supervisor. The Patch Supervisor is responsible for determining if the patch is needed, and applying or seeking out a qualified individual to apply the patch.
The Patch Supervisor should keep a log of all applied SOAPware, OS, and underlying tool patches. This log should be made available to anyone in the office who might call SOAPware, Inc. for technical support should a problem arise.
Before patching SOAPware, the user will need to have a recent full backup of their SOAPware Database. Please consult the backup documentation for more information on how to perform a backup.
Before deciding to patch, you should check the latest release notes list to make sure that the patch resolves an issue that affects your clinic. You can find the release notes list at:
http://soapedia.mysoapware.com/060._Downloads/01._Current_Ver
While SOAPware Inc. makes every effort to thoroughly test all patches before release, there are many environmental variables beyond our control that could affect your system. Patches should only occur during noncritical hours and should be thoroughly tested on an isolated system from your main environment.
Example:Installing a patch that has not been tested in your environment at 9am on a Monday morning is considered a very bad idea and is not recommended.
However, installing a patch on an isolated system on a Thursday evening to test and then installing system wide on Friday would be a great idea if the office is closed on the weekend. This would allow plenty of time to test and rollback the system if there are any unforeseen issues during the patching process.
Due to potential database updates, it is HIGHLY recommended that you plan to patch all systems during the same timeframe it is not recommended that you run multiple patched and un-patched systems in the same environment.
