Would you refill my gobbilty goop?

If a patient asked you to refill the following medication, would you?

n5Ail ox icli0 t2mg.,idDi sp3 ak0, onte e, 3efil m-lsR

Why not?

Well…

Amoxicillin 250 mg., Disp-30, take one tid, 3 Refills

… and the first, bolded line above both appear as the same to computers. It is as gobbily-goop and does not have the required information for electronic prescribing or to be able to share infomation with other information systems. It is only useful to a subset of humans trained to recognize medical jargon.

In SOAPware-2008, we have taken great steps to hide the complexity within the structured data items. For example…

./st1.jpg

...in a SOAPware med field might appear a little complex. However, it contains a format that is not only readable by humans, but has an XML structure the computer can read...

./x1.jpg

./x1.jpg./x2.jpg

-./x3.jpg

./x6.jpg
./x7.jpg

...And, the other half can be viewed in the attached document. The entire XML structure of a patient's SOAPware chart can be directly viewed by using Internet Explorer to open an exported chart file.

What Is XML?
XML is a way of adding intelligence to your documents. It lets you identify each element using meaningful tags and it lets you add information ("metatdata") about each element.

All information in SOAPware is stored using valid XML formats in the database. This is fairly unique for an EMR, and is one of the many reasons SOAPware is now far more technically advanced than most. Each SMARText item is sort of like its own object that not only knows what it is, but knows its relationship to all other objects in the charts. That is why it is not gobbley-goop to the computer.

THE MEDICAL WORLD IS CHANGING!

Using 5x7 paper cards for medical documentation is obsolete. Using free text for all medical documentation is increasingly considered to be obsolete as well.

There is great advantage in using data that can be read by both computers and humans. This is what SMARText is!

Initially, it may seem that SMARText is a little more hassle than free text. In reality, it is actually saving far more hassle, over time, than using free text. The gains provided by SMARText are worth the effort and prepares one for the world changes.
