Co-Signatures have been implemented for sites that need the ability to have a supervisor signature for providers such as residents.
Needed for CCHIT and many sites have residents and mid-level providers.
Sites wanting co-signatures.
At least 2 providers must be licensed in SOAPware, and one of them must NOT be marked as a supervisor. To require a supervisor signature, Click Tools in the menu bar; Click Provider Manager and Click the Is Supervisor checkbox (at the bottom of the Provider Manager dialog) to un-check the.
When logged in as the provider needing a supervisor signature, sign off a document (notice it is still editable). A task will be created for the supervising provider in SOAPware.
Log out and back in as a provider not needing a supervisor signature.
Sign off the same document. The document is now unalterable.
When the document is signed-off by a provider needing a co-signature, a task is created to notify the supervising provider of the co-signature needed.
Co-signing is demonstrated in Pediatric Video #8
Need to allow OPTIONAL co-signature: I should sign off about 10% of my NPs notes. I don't want to make her a non-supervisor, because then i would have to sign off ALL of her notes.
There should be a way for NURSES to "sign" a note--if they given an injection, assess a patient after an injection, etc, they should sign that. But I can't afford to make my nurses providers.

Please check this suggestion with your liability carrier as most of them consider you at risk if you are not co-signing the documentation created by your mid-levels. Next, check your state's legal requirements regarding the supervision of NPs as that will address whether or not a co-signature is legally required.
We have had the unfortunate experience of having users that made assumptions that turned out to be in error, and they suffered avoidable consequences as a result.
This can vary greatly with different liabilty carriers and different states.
